Learn from unsubscribes: How to improve your content to attract long-term readers
Uncovering the truth behind unsubscribes: Improving your content to retain long-term readers”
Are you afraid of unsubscribing? Is unsubscribing really that scary?
Actually, unsubscribing is not scary at all.
Martin Luther King (civil rights leader) once said:
"You can't please everyone; the important thing is to focus on those who truly need you."
So don't be afraid of it; instead, embrace it when unsubscribing happens.
Only then will there be a real customer base. What you really have to do is to retain the remaining customer base.
And provide even better content to keep them.
The mindset of people who unsubscribe
From a psychological perspective:
The phenomenon of unsubscribing can reflect several key factors in consumer behavior and decision-making processes.
The gap between expectations and reality
Cognitive dissonance
Changes in habits and behavior
Self-efficacy
Social comparison
The main key is the content you provide.
no longer able to attract them.
Unable to provide them with value.
So leads to these readers unsubscribing.
I once asked a follower who unsubscribed about their perspective.
Why they decided to unsubscribe from my Instagram account.
He told me that he didn't like my content because it had too many redundant words, which made it difficult for readers to engage with, so he decided to unsubscribe.
I then asked him if he would resubscribe if I made changes.
He said, "Yes, it's possible, but I hope you'll thoroughly check the content. If it’s still as bad, I’ll choose to unsubscribe again."
At that moment, my response was, "Ok, I’m willing to accept your suggestions."
In the following period, I began reading books and writing, continuously for nearly six months.
Everything is designed to provide readers with a comfortable reading experience.
In the end, I was pleased that the reader chose to stay and continue enjoying my articles.
Here are some strategies to address and potentially reduce unsubscribes
“If someone leaves, it means they no longer need your service. This is an opportunity for you to improve.” — Bill Gates
You should improve the quality of your content and precisely address the pain points of your readers.
Think from the reader’s perspective.
Deepen readers' engagement through interactive methods.
Implement regular reward mechanisms.
Data analysis.
Adjust content direction and user management strategies based on the results.
You need to stay vigilant, as new accounts will continue to emerge.
You need to consistently maintain high-quality output to build connections among your readers.
When you successfully address these issues, you'll find that your likes and comments will quickly increase.
This indicates that you're close to success.
Interaction is the best way to reduce unsubscribes
Readers and writing are complementary to each other.
You must constantly interact with your readers, whether through giveaways, asking for feedback, or other methods. These are effective ways to engage with them.
When you have the ability to interact with your readers, you'll find that they will help promote your articles, attract more new audiences, and ultimately lead to a higher conversion rate.
If you're a new writer, here are a few methods to help you:
Leave comments, reviews, and likes under articles you enjoy.
Collaborate with other writers.
In the early stages, these methods can effectively help you gain a foundational fan base.
Once you have gained followers, the next step is to optimize your content. Pay attention to reader preferences and analyze backend data to make informed improvements.
Finally, with your established audience, you can start selling courses or collecting data on what your readers like.
Then, periodically offer rewards to your readers to thank them for their support over the years.
Mutual subscriptions can be problematic
Never fall into the trap of mutual subscriptions.
I know that currently, Instagram and Threads are popularizing the method of "follow for follow" or "follow back" strategies.
Although these terms are popular, they are not ideal practices.
It attracts readers who are not necessarily your target audience, and some might even unfollow the next day.
You end up with a false sense of follower count rather than genuine interactive readers.
Here’s how to identify if a follow is a fake or deceptive one:
First, check if their Instagram following is consistent.
Observe if there is a significant gap between their following and follower count.
Typically for mutual subscriptions, the number of followers and the number of people they follow should be relatively close.
A significant disparity often indicates that the account might be engaging in deceptive follow practices.
You’ll notice that posts from mutual subscriptions often have very few likes. This is because the audience attracted through such practices is not genuinely interested in the content.
Instead, they are just helping each other boost follower counts, which leads to low engagement.
Do you care about the number of unsubscribes
A year ago, I was really concerned about the issue of unsubscribing. It has been bothering me.
It wasn’t until I read a few books that I realized that I should no longer care about unsubscribing.
On the contrary, what I really care about is the quality of the content. Why is it that the content is not well written, which leads to customers or readers unsubscribing,
or the emergence of better competitors than me, which leads to unsubscribing? This is what I need to think about now. question.
So I would like to remind you that the number of threads is never the focus, the focus is the quality of the content.
Only the content itself can really retain people.
